British Pie Week – The Best Pie in Britain!

It’s British Pie Week again and we’re thrilled to be celebrating our favourite dish unabashedly for an entire week! We thought it would be fun to write about the BEST Pie in Britain in this edition of Chunk Chat.
🥧🥧🥧
It goes without saying that determining the "best" pie in Britain is highly subjective and depends on individual tastes and preferences. However, there are several iconic pies that are beloved across the UK for their delicious flavours and rich culinary heritage.

We asked Chat GPT (our favourite AI platform) what the best pie in Britain was and these are the contenders it came back with. We also asked Google but it reeled off a series of sweet pies and we decided it was wrong 🙃

Steak and Ale Pie: A classic British favourite, steak and ale pie features tender chunks of beef cooked in a rich, savoury gravy with mushrooms and onions, all encased in a golden pastry crust. It's hearty, comforting, and quintessentially British.

Chicken and Mushroom Pie: Another beloved classic, chicken and mushroom pie combines succulent pieces of chicken with earthy mushrooms in a creamy sauce, all nestled within a flaky pastry crust. It's a timeless comfort food enjoyed by many.

Shepherd's Pie: Sheperd’s Pie is a British staple that deserves mention. It features minced lamb cooked with vegetables and gravy, topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden and bubbling. Our take on this is the wonderful Sheep Pie.

Cornish Pasty (ahem): Hailing from Cornwall (or does it?!!), the Cornish Pasty is a hand-held pie filled with the savoury ingredients of beef, potatoes, onions, and swede all encased in a sturdy pastry crust. It's a hearty and portable meal that's perfect for on-the-go dining. These points are absolutely true - our Devon Steak Pasty has won countless awards to prove it's a good'un!
Pork Pie: A British pub classic, pork pie features seasoned pork encased in a crisp, golden pastry crust. It's often served cold as a snack, and variations may include added ingredients such as jelly or mustard. Our squealer pork pies go down a treat on a buffet!

Scotch Pie: A Scottish speciality, the Scotch Pie is a small, round pie filled with seasoned minced meat, typically mutton, and encased in a crispy pastry shell. It's a popular snack or street food enjoyed throughout Scotland.

Interestingly, all of these are regulars on our bestseller list (except Scotch Pie which we may have to scribble at the bottom of our recipe experimentation plan!). One pie we think should have had a mention is the Steak & Kidney. Although many loath this bake, it always features among our bestsellers and the recipe dates back to 1800’s.
The British Pie Awards are held this week and we'll be waiting to hear their verdict on this year's Best Pie. We’d love to know what you think. Let us know on social media which one gets your vote!
